Ignorance by tripfuse (Music and lyrics by Teague Purtell © 2004)

Verse 1
Come on ignorance is everywhere
I'm asking you to hear me
Believe me I'm only half crazy
I'm having trouble to play this game
It's all the same
I need to take all the pieces
I need to rearrange
To hold your interest so you can see
We're all not free

Pre-chorus
All this anger is driving me to make a
Change

Chorus
I'm feeling all this anger
cause of everything I see
and I'd like to fix these problems
but I can't cause it's not me

Verse 2
Come on are you really still living that way
I feel this sickness dwelling
Hide from me so I can't hurt you
I need to tell you your still the same
I'm so ashamed
Try to hide it with racist jokes
I hope you choke
Release the hate
It's not to late Don't seal your fate

Pre-chorus
You never know when you have to lead the
Way

Chorus

Bridge
Doesn't matter what I say to you
Some words are false some words are true
Gonna listen cause I want you to
Gonna listen cause I want you to

Verse 3
Come on ignorance is everywhere
I'm telling you to hear me
These people are making me crazy
I'm having trouble to play this game
It's all the same
I need to take all the pieces
I need to rearrange
To hold your interest so you can see
We're all not free

Pre Chorus

Chorus Chorus Ending

Notes..................................................................................

This tune started with the verse guitar riff. I was going for a fast punk like part and to make it bop I added a disco like bass part playing octaves. The melody for the verse was laid down right after the chord progression however, the chorus took quite a bit more time both with the progression and melody. It ended up with a 4 chord progression played on a piano (doubled on clean guitar) with a walking bass line and then a ska like guitar part over it.

The bridge was a riff that came about just fooling around with the different drum beat. It is actually my favorite progression in the song. The piano part gets a little strange and wasn't going to be used but it grew on me and was left and now I really like the way it sounds.

As for the ending, I had a lot of fun with that. The song was actually finished with just the regular chorus repeating and fading but when I was running through my list (I had made a list before starting the cd of things I wanted on the cd) I realized I didn't have a key change in a chorus yet. These Voices of Mine changed keys from the verse to the chorus but I wanted a chorus to repeat in a higher key than the first somewhere on the cd. Kind of like Back Street Boys or Bon Jovi :) You know. So the Ignorance ending got it. So I just took the bass part and moved it up a half step but it didn't quite do it for me. So I ended up adding the arpeggiated guitar pattern to the first of the two end choruses and then moved it up a half step. Still wasn't cutting it for me. So I started messing with different drum beats. Then things started to roll. Once I found the hip hop groove, I decided to drop out the piano part and the ska like guitar part and just left the bass line and new arpeggiated guitar part with the new drum beat. I was diggin it. So I just repeated it up the half step but it seemed to lose something. It was cool. It was a key change up a half step but it was missing something. So I went back to the orginal chorus drum groove for the key change and boom the heavy guitar part came about. And that part just seemed to work it's way right into the end groove. For me the end of this tune was super fun. It was a lot of work but really fun work. With each step giving me a nice new suprise. This has also become one of my favorite endings of all the tripfuse tunes to play live.

I'm not neccessarily happy with the lyrics but I do like the concept. Or at least where I was trying to go with them. I started to write them after coming back from the mall on a beautiful warm summer day. I was coming back from Chipolte (if you don't know what that is...you need to find out...yum..yum) and was in a great mood. As I was standing at the light a car with two elderly black women were waiting to turn left into the mall and two white high school girls pulling out of the mall decided to yell the n word at these two ladies. I saw the look on the womens faces. My heart sunk to my feet. I couldn't believe it. I was not even involved and it completely changed my mood. I can't imagine how it must have made the two women feel. It was messed up and made me angry. And I guess reading back through the lyrics just now, the thing I don't really like is that the line in the chorus says 'I'd like to fix these problems but I can't cause it's not me'. I wrote those because at the time standing at that light I felt bad and wished there was something I could do but felt like there wasn't anything. But there is plenty we can all do. Educate one another. Help one another. Be kind. Speak up. If a friend is saying something you know isn't right. Stand up.
