Stepping Stone by tripfuse (Music and lyrics by Teague Purtell © 2004)

Verse 1
It’s time to take charge of my life
Use who I can use for me
Stomp on all the little ones
I am evil
Without you I may not have made it this far
Doesn’t seem to matter
Don’t need you anymore

Pre-chorus
I don’t need you anymore
You are a stepping stone
I am using you

Chorus
Everybody wants to speak to me sometimes
They wanna tell me their problems
like I’m gonna mind I think that I’ll tell you a story or two
I know you won’t listen but I want you to

Verse 2
Had you had your way
I don’t think so
My life seemed in your hands
Now all has turned
Don’t look at me
I said if I needed needed help

Pre-chorus
I don’t need you anymore
You are a stepping stone
I am using you

Chorus 2
Everybody wants to speak to me sometimes
They wanna tell me their problems like I’m gonna mind
I think that I’ll tell you a story or two
I know you won’t listen but I want you to
I know it’s the time for me
It’s time to make it, time to take it, just wait and see
I don’t need you anymore don’t need you anymore
Don’t need your help get on the floor

Notes..................................................................................

The intial idea for this tune was the chorus with that hip hop feel. I think it was kinda inspired by an Outkast tune on the radio at that time. It was laid down with no guitar, just a strange keyboard sound (much like the one on the cd version) with bass and drums. That melody was laid down within the same 30 minutes. It was a simple chord progression with a hip hop like vocal line. At that time I thought the whole tune would be more along the hip hop line. But as all the tunes did, it became a whole new thing.

As far as the other parts of the tune. I wanted to do at least one tune in drop C (ended up being 3). I wanted a simple idea with a heavy groove and some crazy machine gun like kick drum stuff. The pre-chorus and bridge parts were Pantera influenced big time. Well maybe a little Metallica too. But of course the vocal lines were not what you would hear Pantera or Metallica do. Well probably not.

As far as the lyrics, I think everyone feels this way sometimes. Sick of being walked on, taken advantage of and the people around you just not holding up their end. Spit on them. Use them for what I need. I think the lyrics got their start because of a former band mate.

The screams were done by good friend Steve Turner.
